From Anushka Sharma to Karan Johar : Bollywood Raises Voice Against Rising Domestic Violence During Coronavirus Lockdown

Past days have seen a massive increase in the number of reported domestic violence cases in India. Celebrities like Anushka Sharma, Virat Kohli, Karan Johar, Madhuri Dixit, Farhan Akhtar, Rahul Bose, Vidya Balan, Dia Mirza, Rohit Sharma and Mithali Raj.

Bollywood and cricket enjoy the highest fanbase in the country and hence this one-minute video clip will help in raising awareness among thousands.

#LockdownonDomesticViolence - Some things are more dangerous than the virus

It is so despicable that while doctors, police, general population, and government have been striving to contain the virus through lockdown, there is a surge in domestic abuse cases.

Many speculations are being made that this phenomenon could be due to the unemployment that is prevailing in lower-income households. Lack of job and food creates anger in any individual, but it definitely is not right to displace it on one’s partner.

Speak up for yourself!

“Stand up and break your silence”. The video has been supported by Maharashtra Police and authorities. The police are already catering to meet the demands created by Coronavirus pandemic and in the midst of everything rising violence only generates panic while adding to the burden.

The video urges any victim, survivor, or witness of abuse to come forward and report any instance they see. It is crucial that one is aware of their rights and speaks up without any fear.

What do we need?

According to reports the highest number of cases are evident in lower income families where there is a high lack of education, awareness, employment, and food. This calls for better availability and equal distribution of necessities. More and more people are in a dire need of financial and psychological support.

Some destressing activities like meditation can be very effective in tackling restlessness and calming down a person. Many Bollywood actors are donating to organizations which are providing food kits to daily wage earners and migrants.

It is the need of the hour that each one of us donates in whatever capacity possible, because even a small contribution can feed a hungry mouth.
